Summer Boating Excursions in the Chesapeake Bay

Maryland is lucky to have a unique and beautiful waterway called the Chesapeake Bay. This giant estuary extends 200 miles from the northern end in Maryland to its Atlantic Ocean outlet near Eastern Virginia. As you can imagine, there are plenty of things to see along the Chesapeake Bay, and a marina in Annapolis is a great place from which to embark on an adventure. summer - boating

Severn River

The Severn River extends northwest from Annapolis and boasts numerous beautiful sights. As you cruise the Severn River, you’ll have a chance to see many large waterfront homes, wetlands, and plenty of wildlife. The Severn River also has a lot of history; the south side of the river was settled way back in 1649.

Annapolis Harbor

If you’re more interested in a brief excursion, you might consider cruising around Annapolis Harbor. The harbor offers a unique perspective of the Maryland capital, including a breathtaking view of the Naval Academy. Since Annapolis has been dubbed “America’s Sailing Capital,” you’re bound to see sailboats of all kinds breezing through the harbor.

Bay Bridge Tour

There are several incredible feats of engineering that span the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries. If you leave from an Annapolis marina, you can easily see the Severn River Bridge (also known as the Pearl Harbor Memorial Bridge) and the Naval Academy Bridge in one day. If you’re feeling adventurous, you might head northeast to the Chesapeake Bay Bridge, which spans an amazing 4.3 miles.

Thomas Point Shoal Lighthouse

If you head south from Annapolis, you can visit the Thomas Point Shoal Lighthouse, which is the only active screw-pile lighthouse left in the Chesapeake Bay. The l ½ story hexagonal lighthouse was first lit in 1875, and stands sentinel along the mouth of the South River. It’s important to note that the lighthouse is only open three months out of the year, so it’s a good idea to check the hours before you visit.
